Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg

Founded in 1743, the historic Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is one of Germany’s leading universities with a strong focus on research and an international outlook. About 40,000 students, more than 250 degree programs, 4,000 academic staff, around 500 partnerships with universities across the globe and 180 million euros in third-party funding (2014) drive FAU’s success.

A focus on interdisciplinary collaboration complements the standards of excellence in every field of research at FAU. Together, members of different departments secure third party funding with innovative ideas in eight overarching Major Research Areas. This makes FAU an elite German university in terms of third-party funding per scientist; in engineering FAU is among Germany’s top three. More and more lighthouse projects are developed in close cooperation with other research institutions such as the Max Planck Society, the Helmholtz Association or the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.

FAU cooperates closely with the State of São Paulo and its top-class research institutions, supported by the Bavarian University Center for Latin America (BAYLAT), which is based at FAU. The University’s Welcome Center for scientists from abroad won a best practice award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
